I've got a rather detailed .3do that's just been finished - it's all one texture but has complex geometry. I'd like to see the .3do's geometry lit like a series of surfaces, which would really help to bring out its detail.

How do I do this? Should I convert the original sectors into a shape rather than a .3do, or is there another way? Thanks.

I'm fairly certain the only way to light a 3do is to turn the ambient light in the sector down (matching the lighting of that area) and then use dynamic lights to light that area with the 3do in it. Only dynamic lights affect 3dos.

If you want to light the 3DOs surfaces seperately so that, say, windows are fully lit (or of a certain lighting) you can set the Extra Light on the 3DOs surface.

Though if you want a specific shading on your model (like a nicely lit starship in a cutscene) then use well tweaked dynamic lighting (ghost positions with SetThingLight()).

Thanks guys. That does make a lot of sense actually. When you approach a .3do in the dark and turn on your Field Light, the thing is dynamically lit. Although looking at the item_fieldlight.cog, the field light doesn't seem to use the GetThingLight verb. Zed's help file says to use light=GetThingLight(thing); so I'll try to create the cog myself.

I'll let you know how I get on!

I just used the 00_lightanim.cog, which actually gives me some scope to create creepy shading effects. I'm currently putting my Faded Empire Prologue .3dos up for download now.
