Apparently, the good people over at Microsoft seemed to have overlooked the fact that the majority of people who buy their computers are going to be gamers, and maybe half that majority are retro-gamers (such as myself).

Such appears to be the case with Windows 7. While for some inexplicable reason I am able to run the game System Shock 2 with no problems whatsoever, the big nub for them appears to be Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith.

I used the backdoor installation tutorial here on JKHub to install Jedi Knight, and when I start the game I get a weird dialogue box with text that is either Chinese or Japanese. More strangely is that I can run the editor ZED and actually work on levels (after putting in the correct directory settings).

I know this post was mainly a rant but if anyone who is trying to run JK or MotS on windows 7 and is getting frustratingly similar results, let me know. And also let me know if you have a solution.

I had this issue recently on Vista. Give me a bit and I'll try to remember what I did to fix it. In the meantime, try the following:

*Use Compatibility mode to run as Windows98/ME with the three "Disable ..." options checked.

*Make sure any Mods are turned off.

*use the -windowgui switch at the end of the shortcuts Target line.

Did you copy the video files to the directory? That same error shows up when my game can't find the intro video file.

Huh. I need to recheck that.

yeah, I have no problem with editing JK, but I would like to be able to install Mysteries of the Sith as well. Any ideas?

I know exactly the troubles you've mentioned and after having just managed to install MotS on Windows 7 (x64) I thought I'd offer my tuppence worth (if it's of any help!)

In the "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts" directory (same one as the backdoor "Jedi Knight" directory, with steps detailed here and here), you'll need to do the following:

*) Create a new folder: "Mysteries of the Sith", eg:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Mysteries of the Sith

*) Copy the folders "<CD_DRIVE>:\GAMEDATA\ {CONTROLS,EPISODE,RESOURCE}" into the folder created above, eg:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Mysteries of the Sith\CONTROLS
- C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Mysteries of the Sith\EPISODE
- C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Mysteries of the Sith\RESOURCE

*) Copy the file "<CD_DRIVE>:\GAMEDATA\MININSTALL\JKMSNDLO.GOO" into:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Mysteries of the Sith\RESOURCE

*) Copy the 2 files "JKM.exe" and "OLHOOK.dll" from "<CD_DRIVE>:\GAMEDATA\EXE\" to:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Mysteries of the Sith\

*) Copy Zeq's ddraw.dll file into the same folder as above:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Mysteries of the Sith\
...as this seems to fix any of the graphical issues that most editors/players seem to be experiencing! (remember to "Enable 3D Acceleration"!)

*) Similar to JK, make sure all files and folders within:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Mysteries of the Sith\
...are *NOT* marked as "Read-Only", otherwise you'll get the fancy "ERR_CANNOT_LOAD_FILE {presumably same message in Chinese...}" warning/alert message.

*) Finally, when creating a shortcut/link to the exe (eg: for a Desktop icon) remember to do the same as JK and add the "-windowgui" switch to sort the menu problem out!

Hope this gets you up and running! (well it did me )

holy crap it worked! thanks for your help. I prefer MotS to JK in editing, but I still can't get that windowsgui-whatever to work. it keeps saying that it is invalid.

I have (finally) updated the Install JK tutorial and created a new Install MotS tutorial, based on Jackpot's and others' experiences.

The windowgui option should be enabled as described by the Run JK with Command-Line Parameters tutorial (also updated today by me).
